Build the expression in layers

Start with the round black center, then shape the upper and lower eyelids. Add eyelashes for character and finish with a white outer highlight and two small dots of light.

Before stitching, compare the eye positions on both sides of the face. Work a little at a time and check the expression from a distance; small changes in placement can make a noticeable difference.
